General information about clamp meters: Clamp
meters are measuring devices Measurement of electric values is a traditional possibility to get detailed information about resistance, voltage, current and further values. Mostly it is not feasible to interrupt a current circuit to get information about the current. At this point our clamp meters will be applied. Clamp meters offer the opportunity to measure current directly. Current has to be measured, traditionally, in series. The current circuit has to be interrupted for that. The fact is that electric cables are building a magnetic field. Clamp meters will benefit from that. They have got an iron core of layered electric sheets that is parceled by a secondary coil. The core is isolated and divisible. Therefore clamp meters can be wrapped around the conductor. An induction voltage will appear in case of the magnetic field of the conductor. Clamp meters will convert this induction voltage and afterwards display the values. Therefore the possibility to measure current fast, easily and of course safely exists. This method does just work with alternating current. To measure direct current another circuit is necessary. These Clamp meters do just have an iron core which is, on the inside of the device, not connected. An air box exists where a hall sensor is placed. This sensor measures current on the conductor through the iron core. After an enforced signal this will be shown! A few clamp meters offer both functions (AC and DC) other clamp meters just a modi. Mostly, clamp meters do have multimeter functions like determination of power and resistance. For this, sockets for the connection of test prods are available. To display the effective power the product of voltage*current will be used. Resistance will be shown by this formula: R=U/I |
