Salt meters
At PCE-Instruments you will find salt meters to measure salt content. You can choose among different salt meters to measure salt content following the direct method with the help of the optical refractometers or to determine salt content following the indirect method by means of conductivity meters. Salt meters are suitable to measure salt contents in aqueou s solutions or viscous media. We recommend to use refractometers to measure sea water or solutions with high salt content. With the indirect method you will obtain the conductivity value which will proportionally increase with the salt content. You can choose between salt meters for flowing or pure water (it is important for certain industries). We offer salt meters with different conductivity measurement fields. It is important to know that salt meters can emit most of the time electric conductivity as a measurement value in µS/cm. But it is often used the unit mg/l (direct reading of salt content in dissolved solid substances). The relation is the following: 2 µS/cm = 1ppm (parts per million) = 1 mg/l. Salt meters have both automatic and manual temperature compensation. Information about conductivity: An object's or circuit's ability to conduct an electric current between two points.  Electrolytic conductivity of aqueous solutions (water) will depend on the amount of substance concentration in water, the degree of dissociation, valence of positive and negative ions as well as the mobility of these ions influenced by the temperature. Our conductivity meters can detect the real number of ions. Regarding plugs, conductivity means the sum to know the number of ions as well as the total amount of salt. On the other hand, conductivity in water does not provide any information regarding substances so to get this information you will need a photometer. In a photometer measurement values are offered in relation to a reference temperature (i.e. 25ºC). To establish this relation almost all the conductivity meters have a internal temperature compensation. With the help of conductivity meters, the total amount of salt in water can be detected. (note: in most cases it is the sum of the parameters)
